Eldon man suffers serious injuries after Fourth of July fireworks accident
ELDON, IOWA —
An Eldon man is still recovering after a terrible Fourth of July fireworks accident.
According to Wapello County Chief Deputy Don Phillips, the 36-year-old was setting fireworks off near the intersection of Elm and Seventh Street in Eldon.
One of the fireworks the man lit did not go off, so he picked it up and it detonated in his hands.
Authorities received the call a little after 9 p.m. The man suffered severe damage to his hands and was taken via helicopter to a hospital in Des Moines.
Phillips says the best way to avoid a situation like this is to leave a lit firework alone for a long period of time – even for a day, if you can – before you pick it up again.
