It was busy morning for firefighters across southeast Iowa.

Just after 3 a.m. Thursday, Fairfield crews were called to a report of a garage fire at 808 West Taylor Ave.

By the time they arrived, the garage was engulfed in flames and the fire spread quickly to the house.

Firefighters say no one was inside the house when it caught fire, and no one was injured in the blaze.

Department driver Brad Waugh told KTVO the house appeared to be a total loss.

The family did have a cat, which was later found alive outside.

Waugh said the department has contacted the American Red Cross to help the family find a place to stay.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Ottumwa firefighters also had their hands full Thursday morning, battling two house fires; the first on Washing Street and another on Adella Street.
