Florists give recommendations to make Valentine flowers last longer

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and many people will be out shopping for flowers.

With so many options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

KTVO asked management of the flower department at Ottumwa’s southside Hy-Vee store what they’re offering. The store has everything from flowers, to chocolate and balloons.

The store also works with specific budgets and flower requests.

"You can specify what you want or you can leave it open and give us a certain price range and we can work with any of that. We have some different options for a dozen roses—as wraps or you can do an arrangement in a vase," said Angie Carnahan, Hy-Vee Floral Manager.

The type of flowers and how you care for them will determine how long they remain fresh.

"Depending on the flower. The carnations are gonna last a little longer. Roses, lilies—you get into the more delicate flowers. Gerbera daisies aren’t as longer lasting, but you can definitely help with the flower fresh food and then the fresh water will help last several extra days," said Megan Hannam, Hy-Vee Floral Assistant Manager.

Management added that flowers typically last longer in cooler temperatures, and recommend never leaving them in your vehicle because they will die in freezing temperatures.
