A heartland food pantry is teaching residents about food preservation this week.

The Lord's Cupboard of Jefferson County hosted a community workshop in Fairfield Tuesday.

Local families learned how to freeze, dehydrate and pressurize canned produce.

Tuesday's class was part of the Iowa State Extension's Growing Together Program, which aims to address food insecurity in Iowa.

Program coordinators hope these sessions will bring the community together, and reduce food waste.

“This encompasses several aspects including gardening, working with youth as well as teaching adults how to do basic things in the kitchen like prepare fresh produce or food preservation,” said program coordinator, Taylor Trudell.

Organizers are planning to bring the class back to Fairfield next year.
