A former Kirksville mayor and community leader passed away this weekend at 84.

Edwin C. Carpenter died at his home Saturday just short of his 85th birthday.

Head of the Division of Language and Literature at Truman State University from 1973 until his retirement in 1995, Carpenter served on the Kirksville City Council from 1996 until 2001, including two years as mayor.

Described as “always open to a good debate,” Carpenter spent much of his more than four decades in Kirksville listening to and serving the community.

At various times since 1973, he served as president of the Kirksville Rotary Club, the United Way board, Missouri’s Northeast Regional District Municipal League and the Northeast Regional Planning Commission. In addition, Carpenter was one of the founding members of the Red Barn Arts Festival, and served on the board of the Kirksville Arts Association.

A memorial is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at First United Methodist Church in Kirksville.

Donations may be made to the Kirksville Arts Association Building Fund.
