Bystanders cheered on their favorite teams at the Winter Cardboard Boat Race at the Aquatic Center in Kirksville Saturday afternoon.

The Aquatic Center hosted its first ever boat race last year in the fall.

Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Robin Hardens says because the Aquatic Center is underutilized this time of year, they decided to hold another boat race this winter.

Harden says it's an event that gets people out to enjoy the facility and put kids creative skills to the test.

“It was so fun to see the different creations. There were kids that went with small designs, large designs, there were floats, there were attachments and all kind of unique things that were used for paddles.”

Harden says the center plans on making Cardboard Boat Races a reoccurring event.
