Highway patrol K-9 unit bags 62 pounds of pot during traffic stop

A simple traffic violation lands one Florida man in jail with drug charges after 62 pounds of marijuana was found inside his vehicle by a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper and a K-9 unit.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the trooper stopped a vehicle at 12:06 a.m. Monday for a lane violation on I-70 at the 105 mile marker in Cooper County.

During a search of the vehicle, K-9 Rony alerted the trooper to drugs in the vehicle; troopers found 62 pounds of marijuana.

The Highway Patrol's arrest report showed Derek Eaton, 40, from Gainsville, Florida, was taken into custody Monday morning for the incident.

Eaton was booked into the Cooper County Jail for distribution of a controlled substance, marijuana and operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner.

His bond was set at $5,000 cash only.

Eaton is due in court Tuesday.
