Northern Missouri police are investigating the discovery of a body.

The Trenton Police Department said on its Facebook page that the human remains were found early Monday morning in a wooded area near GFG Ag Services on Shanklin Avenue in central Trenton.

Around 7:30 a.m., some students stumbled upon the remains while walking to school.

The body could be that of Tanner Ward, 20, who has been missing since June 7, 2017.

Police are not releasing any information about the remains at this time.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to make a positive identification and possibly determine a cause of death.

A missing person poster states that Ward left home on foot on June 7. The poster goes on to say that he had no cell phone, cash or credit cards.

A friend of Ward's family told KTVO on Monday that police have spoken to Tanner's sister about the discovery, but police are not commenting as the investigation continues.
