Update: One dead from Fairfield head-on crash

Update: One person has died as the result of a Friday morning head-on crash west of Fairfield.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Maria Fernandez, 68, of Ottumwa, died while being transported to Jefferson County Health Center.

Fernandez lost control of her vehicle as she crossed a small bridge on Old Highway 34 just before 6 a.m.

She struck a vehicle driven by Kevin Hanna, 56, of Fairfield.

Hanna was uninjured, but two passengers in his vehicle, Rebecca Hanna, 54, and Valerie Banks, 47, were transported to the hospital.

Maria Martinez, 61, was a passenger in the vehicle driven by Fernandez. She was also hospitalized.

Multiple people were injured Friday morning after an snow-covered bridge contributed to a head-on collision.

The accident happened around 6 a.m. on old Highway 34 just west of Fairfield.

Jefferson County Sheriff Gregg Morton told KTVO that two vehicles were attempting to navigate a small bridge when they struck each other head-on.

Morton said multiple people were transported to the hospitals with injuries.

Highway 34 Exit 210 was closed to traffic for about an hour while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Morton says that investigation into the crash was ongoing and he hoped to be able to provide additional information later in the day.
