An explosion critically injured a northeast Missouri man this week while he was servicing a home air conditioning unit.

The blast happened around 6:15 p.m. Monday at a home on Crest Trail southwest of Kirksville.

Emergency crews said Joe Shoop, 47, of Kirksville, lost his left hand and his entire right arm when a tank used to reclaim refrigerant exploded.

A family member of Shoop's told KTVO his legs were also badly injured in the blast.

Shoop was flown from the scene to University Hospital in Columbia, where he was listed in serious condition as of late Wednesday morning.

The family said Shoop has already undergone three surgeries.

Shoop works as a self-employed HVAC technician.
