On December 11, Tyler Hance along with Detective Nathan Selby of the Kirksville Police Department both took action when they noticed a vehicle sinking in Spur Pond along Osteopathy Street in Kirksville.

Christian Perez, 62, of Kirksville, was rescued by Hance and Selby before the SUV he was in sank.

Dakota Davis, 26, of Kirksville, died in that tragedy.

Selby was notified while on duty and rushed to the scene where he helped Hance.

On Thursday, the police department gave Hance a Citizen Commendation Award and Selby received the Meritorious Service Award.

"In all honesty, Tyler did 95 percent of the work. I mean he swam out got him, and like I said, I went in about to my waist to help both of them get out of the water, but I commend Tyler for what he did,"Selby said.

Hance was unable to attend the award presentation ceremony due to work obligations.
