Some of the Kirksville community gathered at the Kirksville Country Club Thursday night to honor young professionals making their mark in the heartland.

“We’re just trying to engage our young professionals in the community. We’re very thankful that we have young professionals in the area. We want to keep that good talent here," said Jeri Speak, president of Young Professionals board.

13 young professionals between the ages of 21 and 40 were nominated to receive the 5 under 40 award at a banquet Thursday at the Kirksville Country Club.

The banquet is hosted by Kirksville Young Professionals.

Speak says they are a group run by Kirksville's Chamber of Commerce and are dedicated to making Kirksville a better place .

“They want to be professional so we want to give them what some of their employers aren’t able to give them and help them get involved in the community in many different ways. “

The banquet has a total of 13 nominees.

Speak says there were 5 winners selected.

“We look for people that are not only young professionals in the community, but people that are giving back to their community in some way or another. People that are looking to better Kirksville.”

Speak says the group is all about exposing young professionals in Kirksville to the opportunities already here in town.

“I want people to know that they can stay here and be professionals. It’s a small town and I think people struggle to realize that they can advance in their careers while staying here.”

Rachael Kissee, a previous 5 Under 40 award winner, was the keynote speaker.
