March trial for Bloomfield driver accused of killing Amish boy
BLOOMFIELD, Iowa —
A Bloomfield, Iowa, man accused of vehicular homicide will now face a jury in March.
The trial of Terry Petary was set to begin later this month, but on Wednesday, a judge granted a defense motion for a continuance.
Petary's trial is now scheduled to start on March 19.
Prosecutors allege that in June, Petary was driving the truck that struck two Amish boys walking along the side of a road near Drakesville.
Merlin Beechy, 9, was killed as a result.
Beechy's brother, Nathan, 12, suffered serious injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.
Petary is also facing felony drug charges. The investigation into that activity began after his arrest in the death of Beechy.
Petary has been in custody since his arrest.
The next scheduled court date in the case, a March 1 pre-trial conference.
