Authorities say a medical condition is to blame for the crash of an OATS van Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews rushed to a home a few miles west of Novinger, Mo., just before 1:30 p.m.

According to the highway patrol report, the driver of the van pulled off Highway 6 because of a medical condition that a witness told KTVO was described as chest tightness. OATS provides public transport, especially for seniors.

But instead of stopping, the van accelerated through a yard and hit a parked trailer and a tree.

The driver, Robert Lewis, 67, of Trenton, Mo., and a passenger, Joyce Smith, 67, of Unionville, Mo., were taken to Northeast Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries.
