Police: La Plata man stole from Ottumwa Walmart via fire escape
OTTUMWA, Iowa —
A La Plata, Missouri, man pleaded not guilty after police say he tried to steal $4,000 worth of merchandise from the Ottumwa Walmart.
According to court documents, on March 5, Audra Owen Newcomer and his accomplice loaded up a Walmart shopping cart and tried to get away without paying by pushing it through a fire escape. Newcomer’s accomplice pulled their getaway car up to the exit, where they then attempted to load in their stolen merchandise.
Records say all of this activity was captured by Walmart’s security cameras.
Newcomer was arrested on Monday with a $5,000 bond. He faces charges for Second-Degree Theft and Conspiracy to Commit Non-Forcible Felony.
His preliminary hearing will be on March 20.
