New tax to add additional revenue
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. —
"House-sharing" company Airbnb will automatically collect and remit the Missouri sales tax of 4.2 percent beginning Feb. 1.
This comes after the company reached an agreement with the Missouri Department of Revenue.
In a statement, Airbnb said if Missouri bookings are replicated from the last 12 months, the tax could mean $1.1 million in additional revenue for the state.
Those who are looking to place their home or room up for rent should check local ordinances.
In Kirksville, perspective renters need a “special use permit.”
Approval from the city varies from neighborhood to neighborhood.
