An abandoned home on Ottumwa's west end was destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning.

The Ottumwa Fire Department responded to the home in the 200 block of Caldwell just before 10 a.m.

The house was engulfed in smoke when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Fire Chief Tony Miller told KTVO that the decision to let the structure burn to the ground was made quickly.

Miller said he spoke with the home's owner, who told him he was in the process of turning the property over to the city.

Ottumwa city officials had no problem letting the structure burn.

Miller said letting the house burn wasn't a tough decision.

A fire damaged abandoned home would be an easy target for arsonists, and Miller said he knew his department would be dealing with another fire at the property sooner or later.

Firefighters cordoned off the street and spend the morning making sure the fire couldn't spread.
