An Oskaloosa woman can't seem to wrap her mind around the fact that her high school sweetheart is now behind bars for attempted murder.

KTVO met Kiara Freeman in Oskaloosa Tuesday morning, to find out how she's holding up since her husband's arrest.

Kiara says she's on the verge of tears after watching Oskaloosa police officers take her husband, 26-year-old Deon Freeman, away in handcuffs earlier this month.

Online court documents allege Freeman opened fire at a Chevy Impala he thought was driven by 18-year-old Cellous Glover.

Freeman later told police he fired the gun after he said Glover pointed his gun at Freeman, and then ran the Impala into the back of Freeman's vehicle. Freeman was taken into custody Jan. 5 and charged with Attempted Murder.

Kiara said the entire situation has been a nightmare.

"I’ve just been praying about the situation and God's given me strength because if not, I would be crying my eyes out every day," she said.

If convicted as charged, Freeman could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison.

"That's De'Kierra's whole life," Kiara said.

De'Kierra is their 6-year-old daughter.

"She's been affected by it really bad,” Kiara said. “She's telling me she can't sleep at night and she cries a lot now."

For now, Kiara is taking the situation in, one day at a time. She said weekly visits at the Mahaska County Jail are helping her get by…

"I talk to him every day,” Kiara said. “They have visitations and I go see him every visitation."

Freeman is in custody on a $100,000 bond.
