Osky bypass moving forward

Highway 63/163 near Oskaloosa./KTVO

The plan to build a Highway 63 bypass around Oskaloosa, Iowa, continues to gain momentum.

The Iowa Department of Transportation released the Environmental Assessment of the project this week.

Concerned citizens have until December 4 to comment on the document.

The Highway 63 bypass project was conceived in 2009.

The city of Oskaloosa is already bypassed by Highway 163 to Des Moines.

However, motorists traveling on Highway 63 must drive through the heart of Oskaloosa.

That creates traffic safety problems for the city, particularly at the busy intersection of 63 and Highway 92 just north of Oskaloosa's square.

The bypass would create a new interchange on Highway 163 northwest of town.

That two lane road would then connect with Highway 63 near 210th Avenue, roughly three miles north of the city limits.
