Ottumwa applies for another upper-story housing grant
OTTUMWA, Iowa —
Downtown Ottumwa could be getting five more upper-story apartments on Main Street.
Tuesday night, the city decided to move forward with another Community Development Block Grant.
Applications are due Friday. The city could be awarded up to $500,000 next month for the proposed housing project.
If the state awards the grant to Ottumwa, construction would begin in the 300 block of East Main Street in July.
"There's a need for both upper story housing opportunities in downtown as well as low-to-moderate income type housing in town, so this fills both of those needs with one stone," said Area 15 Senior Planner Brad Grefe.
Grefe says rent could be as low as $825 a month.
He added that there Is high demand for housing in Ottumwa. Just last year, developers added 22 more units downtown. All of those apartments were filled within four months.
