Ottumwa authorities respond to report of armed suspect
OTTUMWA, Iowa —
Ottumwa police officers made an arrest Tuesday, following a report of an armed suspect.
Around 1 p.m., officers were staged outside of a home on North Wapello Street, near West Maple Avenue.
Authorities were armed as they entered the home. Moments later, two officers brought a man outside in handcuffs.
Police Chief Tom McAndrew said officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant when the suspect put a knife to his own neck.
McAndrew said the man eventually surrendered to authorities and he was taken to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center. McAndrew did not know right away, the man's name or why there was a warrant for his arrest.
More information will be released as it becomes available.
