Ottumwa caregiver charged with stealing from patients set to plead guilty
OTTUMWA, Iowa —
An Ottumwa woman charged with stealing thousands of dollars from more than a dozen patients will plead guilty.
Malia Ollom was arrested in April.
Ollom was a caregiver at Crest Services Crest Services in January of 2018 when managers noticed signs of fraudulent activity.
Crest managers immediately asked authorities to investigate Ollom. Her employment at Crest was terminated a few days later.
An audit showed that more than $5,000 was stolen from several different patients sometime between 2017 and January of 2018.
She was charged with nearly two dozen counts: including theft, dependent abuse, forgery, and on-going criminal conduct.
Online court records show that Ollom's plea hearing is set for Oct. 15.
Court documents don't indicate what charges Ollom will be pleading to or what the possible penalty might be.
The most serious of the charges is the On-going Criminal Conduct.
That is a Class "B" felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
Ollom has been free on bond since shortly after her arrest.
