Ottumwa teacher sex case delayed again

The trial Jose Ortiz, Jr., 27, was is now set for March 26.

The trial of an Ottumwa teacher accused of having sex with a student has been pushed back once again.

The case against Jose Ortiz, Jr., 27, was set to go to trial March 12.

On Tuesday, the defense asked for a delay.

Court records show that the defense has been unable to depose the alleged victim and asked the court for more time to do so.

The motion was granted and the trial date was set for March 26.

The latest court filings continue to hint at a possible plea deal in the case, but as of Wednesday, no deal had been reached.

Ortiz was arrested in April 2017 and charged with one count of Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee.

In the criminal complaint, both Ortiz and the victim admitted to having an extended sexual relationship.

Oritz faces up to five years in prison if he is convicted as charged.
