Overnight arrest at Ottumwa gas station gets violent, police say
OTTUMWA, Iowa —
A homeless man is facing a string of charges following his arrest in Ottumwa.
Just after midnight Monday, Ottumwa police officers were called to a report of trespassing at the YesWay gas station on Church Street.
Witnesses told police a man helped himself to a six pack of beer and food without paying for those items.
Police say the suspect, later identified as Gilbert Riddick, 37, resisted arrest and tried to punch an officer in the face.
Riddick was examined in an ambulance by medical personnel before he was taken to jail.
Authorities charged him with Interference with Official Acts, Fifth-Degree Theft and Assault on a Peace Officer.
Riddick remains in custody at the Wapello County Jail on $2,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in court for his preliminary hearing this Monday.
