Police officer rescues drowning toddler from pond

The toddler was heard screaming in the area of Spur Pond (KTVO)

UPDATE: The Kirksville Police Department has released the names of the officers involved in the rescue.

Truman State Department of Public Safety Officer, Slade Kelly heard the child on the opposite side of the pond and observed the child enter the water. KPD Officer Jason Underwood was able to reach the submerged child and pull him from the water.


A three-year-old boy was safely pulled from a pond late Wednesday night.

Sergeant Bachman of the Kirksville Police Department told KTVO on scene that the toddler was reported missing around 10 p.m. from a trailer at Dogwood Trailer Court at 909 West Gardner Street.

While officers were working together to search the area, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a Truman State Officer reported hearing a child screaming around the area of Spur Pond. A Kirksville Police Officer who was walking the banks of the pond then found the child in the water.

The KPD officer was able to pull the child from the water. The toddler was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but had no apparent injuries.
