SE Iowa college student arrested for recording Snapchat sex video of a minor

    James Marion Lobdell/Wapello County Jail

A southeast Iowa college student is facing a felony charge this week after police say he recorded and shared a video of an underage girl performing a sex act on him.

James Marion Lobdell, 18, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is charged with Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, a Class D Felony.

According to court documents filed Tuesday, Lobdell recorded the video on April 29, 2018, at the 17-year-old girl's residence in Mount Pleasant, and then shared it in a Snapchat story on Nov. 28, 2018. The video was viewed by at least one person, who then showed it to the victim. Investigators with the Mount Pleasant Police Department say the victim was not aware of the video until it was shared on Snapchat.

A search of Lobdell's Snapchat profile turned up one other video from the same day showing the victim partially nude.

Ottumwa police officers arrested Lobdell Wednesday night at Indian Hills Community College. He has since been transferred to the Henry County Jail.

If convicted as charged, Lobdell could face up to five years in prison.
