SE Iowa driver airlifted to hospital after dump truck rolls in ditch
NEAR NEW SHARON, Iowa —
A southeast Iowa truck driver was seriously injured in a rollover crash near New Sharon Friday morning.
Around 11 a.m. Friday, Mahaska County deputies were called to the 1400 block of Highway 63, one mile south of New Sharon, where a dump truck was resting on its top in a ditch.
Investigators say the truck, which was carrying several tons of gravel, was northbound on Highway 63 when it crossed over into the southbound lane, left the roadway and overturned.
The driver, Donald Keith Wonderlich, 68, of Ollie, Iowa, was trapped inside the vehicle.
Rescue officials freed Wonderlich from the driver's side. He was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines with unknown injuries.
The cause remains under investigation. The New Sharon Fire Department, Mahaska County Dispatch Center and the Iowa State Patrol assisted the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office with Friday's crash.
