Sedalia man behind bars following an attempted abduction of little girl

Sedalia police were called Saturday for reports that Corey T. Owens, 29, attempted to abduct the girl from a residence in the 300 block of W. 7th street.

A homeless Sedalia man has been charged with kidnapping and assault among other charges for allegedly dragging and carrying a 10-year-old girl from her yard as she screamed for neighbors to help.

According to our sister station, KRCG, Sedalia police were called Saturday for reports that Corey T. Owens, 29, attempted to abduct the girl from a residence in the 300 block of W. 7th street.

Police say there were several witnesses.

Witnesses say that Owens, who is homeless and had been staying at a residence in the neighborhood, walked up to the victim, who was playing in the yard, and took a pocket knife from her.

The victim said at that point, Owens grabbed her by the hand and hair and began forcing her down the street, where he shoved her against a van and tried to make the scene appear normal by remaining outwardly calm.

During the ordeal, the girl was screaming for help, according to numerous witnesses. A neighbor came to the girl's rescue and separated her from Owens, at which point several neighbors detained Owens until police arrived.Court documents state that Owens is charged with kidnapping, possession of a controlled substance, third-degree assault, and resisting arrest. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
