UPDATE:

A truck driver walked away unharmed after the semi he was driving overturned in Ottumwa Monday.

Just before 5 p.m., crews were called to the intersection of Highway 34 and Roemer Avenue, where the tractor-trailer, which was carrying hogs, overturned on its side.

By 7 p.m. Monday, Ottumwa crews were in the process of removing roughly 175 hogs from the trailer. Emergency officials are still trying to determine if any of the hogs were killed as a result of the crash.

Once all of the animals are freed from the trailer, Wapello County Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Richmond said crews will be done for the night. He added that the tractor-trailer will be left at the scene until weather conditions improve.

As of 7:15 Monday night, Richmond said the westbound lane of Highway 34 was down to one lane.
