Semi driver charged with OWI in Wapello County crash

Sgt. Nathan Ludwig with the Iowa State Patrol confirmed the semi driver in Monday's crash is charged with OWI/KTVO

Troopers with the Iowa State Patrol have made an arrest in Monday's semi crash in Wapello County.

Around 4 p.m. Monday, Wapello County first responders were called to the accident at the intersection of Highway 34 and 194th Avenue.

Deputies at the scene told KTVO the semi, which was carrying salt, was westbound on Highway 34 when it left the roadway and rolled on its side. The driver, later identified as Justin Mendenhall, 32, of Unionville, Missouri, told authorities the sun's glare impaired his sight, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

Sgt. Nathan Ludwig with the Iowa State Patrol said troopers later arrested Mendenhall and charged him with Operating While Intoxicated.

Mendenhall was taken to the Wapello County Jail. He was released from custody after posting bond Tuesday.

Mendenhall was not injured in the crash.
