A pickup truck slammed into a streetlamp and coasted into a Kirksville backyard early Sunday morning.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., Kirksville police responded to the corner of North Baltimore Street and Suburban Drive, near Home Depot.

Officer said the driver was traveling southbound on Baltimore Street when he crossed the street and collided with a streetlamp.

As a result, that streetlamp was knocked over. His pickup then continued over the downed streetlight before coming to a stop in a backyard just feet from the home.

The motorist told officers he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The airbags deployed in the vehicle and the driver was not injured.

Officers told KTVO at the scene that wet road conditions may have also been a factor in the crash, but that an investigation is ongoing.
