The Ottumwa Fire Department is not only putting out fires this month, but they are also getting in the holiday spirit.

Since 2011, the fire department has been helping Sieda Community Action and The Salvation Army collect toys through the annual Sparky Claus fundraiser.

Each person who wishes to donate will select a Christmas wish list that belongs to one or more child in need.

Assistant Fire Chief Mike Craff explained to KTVO the role firefighters have when they participate in the Sparkly Claus tradition.

We're in the process now of doing our big toy drive now. Which how people qualify for that is through Sieda. They qualify for the housing assistance, then they qualify for sparky. and we take the families that qualify and put them on a name card and distribute them to about eight different businesses in Ottumwa.

The Ottumwa Fire Department will accept donations year-round for those who miss the deadline.

Now we're buying coats for the kids in Ottumwa's school system and through Sieda. We've already purchased over 120 coats for kids this year, said Sparky Craff

The Ottumwa Fire department has also purchased 12 car seats for the American Home Finding Association. They've also provided coats, hats and gloves to three Wapello County families who have lost everything to a house fire.
