Student found with gun at OHS faces felony charge

UPDATE: The Ottumwa Community School District has released a timeline of Thursday's events. Ottumwa High School student Tyler Jordan Tucker was found in possession of a gun and knife on school property. Tucker had shown his weapons to another student around 9 o'clock. That student then reported it to a teacher who called the school resource officer.

By 10 a.m. the assistant principal and SRO removed Tucker from his class and immediately separated him from his belongings. The SRO then found both a gun and knife in Tucker's backpack. The superintendent and principal were then notified and made sure there were no other safety concerns.

Superintendent Nicole Kooiker says the high school did not go into lock down because the situation was contained within minutes.

In the statement released by the District Office, Kooiker also says the Ottumwa School District is committed keeping their students safe: "We can’t control what the students do but we can control our response. I’m proud of the quick action taken by staff to contain the situation."

Here is the exact timeline sent out by the District Office:

• Student showed another student the gun during second period (8:48 - 9:22)

• Student that was showed the gun reported to staff member at approximately 9:55 a.m.

• Staff member reported incident to School Resource Officer (SRO) at 9:57 a.m.

• SRO contacted an Associate Principal at 9:58 a.m.

• Associate Principal and SROs removed student from his classroom at 9:59 a.m. Student was separated from possessions immediately.

• Student was questioned by SROs and Associate Principals conducted a search of the backpack at approximately 10 a.m. Gun and knife blade were found in bag.

• Superintendent and High School Principal were immediately notified and immediately worked to assure there were not additional safety concerns.

• Superintendent and High School Principal interviewed staff member.

• SRO notified Ottumwa Police Department supervisor, Sergeant Aljets.

• Parent was notified by SRO.

• Sergeant Aljets interviewed all students involved.

• Staff email sent out at 10:52 a.m. and parent/community notifications sent shortly thereafter.


The student found in possession with a gun at Ottumwa High School has been identified as 16-year-old Tyler Jordan Tucker.

According to a press release from the Ottumwa Police Department, around 10 a.m., a school resource officer found a 9mm handgun in Tucker's backpack.

He has been arrested and charged with carrying weapons on school grounds, a Class “D” felony. Tucker is being charged as an adult.

He posted a $5,000 bond and is no longer in custody.


An Ottumwa High School student was pulled from class Thursday morning after it was determined he was in possession of a firearm.

A statement from the District Office said the situation didn't involve any threats made by the student.

The student was questioned by the school resource officer.

District officials say the situation was under control and all students and staff are safe.

The school planned on keeping to its original 12:30 p.m. dismissal time.

The investigation is ongoing and the district says it will release more information as allowed by confidentiality laws.
