Those in need able to receive free meal at Heartland cafe
Kirksville, MO. —
The holidays are a time of giving, but one Heartland business wants to extend the act of giving even after the holidays are over.
Take Root Cafe in Kirksville is kicking off their Feed 500 campaign.
As a way of sticking to their mission of alleviating hunger and promoting health, tokens will be given out to those in need in exchange for a meal up to $8.
The first way you can help is by donating to Take Root at the cafe or online.
You can choose to have a package of meal tokens delivered to your home and you will be able to give them out to the community.
Or, you can choose to have Take Root distribute the tokens on your behalf via their community partner organizations.
Executive Director Jessica Parks says they hope to raise enough funds to give away 500 tokens by December 31.
The tokens will be given to the community once the campaign has ended at the end of the month.
“ It’s really important because unfortunately Adair County is one of the poorest counties in Missouri and has a very high food insecurity rate. Winter months are especially hard because there are high utility cost, extra things like that and we want to make sure that people get food who need," Parks said.
