Three escape from Burlington house fire

Three people have escaped from a smoky fire that damaged a garage and its contents at the back of their home in Burlington.

David Cloke told The Hawk Eye newspaper that his daughter awakened him a little after 11 p.m. Saturday after she heard a loud bang. She thought someone was trying to break into the garage. Cloke says that when he opened a door to the garage, smoke poured into his house.

Cloke got his wife and daughter out and then called 911. His efforts to put out the fire with water from a garden hose failed. Cloke praised firefighters for containing the flames to the garage.

The fire cause is being investigated.
