Two people were taken to area hospitals this evening after the SUV they were traveling in was rear ended by a large pick-up truck.

Authorities responded to a report of a car crash with injuries on Highway 34 around 5:45 this evening, about 2 miles west of the Ottumwa city limits.

Upon arrival, a mid-sized SUV was turned sideways in the middle of the roadway and a white pick-up truck was stuck in a roadside ditch.

A Wapello County Sheriff at the scene said that both vehicles were traveling westbound on 34 when the SUV came to a stop to make a left turn into a driveway.

Police then said the truck failed to stop and slammed into the back of the SUV, completely caving in the back of the vehicle up to the rear wheels.

Authorities said one of the individuals taken to the hospital appeared to suffer an arm injury.

It did not appear that either person had life-threatening injuries.

Traffic in both directions was shut down for approximately 30 minutes as crews worked to free those who were injured from the wrecked SUV.

The sheriff said a citation would be issued to the driver of the truck as a result of the crash.
