Two Heartland police officers were honored Thursday evening for their work to save a toddler from drowning this fall.

Truman State University Officer Slater Kelley and Kirksville Police Officer Jason Underwood received the 2018 Missouri Police Chiefs Association Medal of Valor.

Several other officers received awards, but Ofc. Kelley and Ofc. Underwood were the only two in the state who received the Medal of Valor.

They were recognized at the Missouri Police Chief Association’s annual conference in Jefferson City.

On September 19th, the two officers found a three-year-old boy in Spur Pond and were able to pull him from the water in time.

The boy was not injured. His father is facing a felony charge of Neglect of a Child from the incident.
