Iowa Wesleyan men's soccer wins in overtime
The men’s soccer team hosted Spalding University for their second SLIAC match of the season.
The Tigers were coming off a draw against Webster University, and faced the preseason favorites this afternoon.
It looked like Iowa Wesleyan was in for another draw, but IW was able to get the golden goal in the second overtime for the 2-1 win over Spalding.
Both teams were pretty evenly matched in the opening period of play on this rainy afternoon.
There was not a lot of action on goal for either team. Trevor Haasis finished with three saves in the first half, while Spalding recorded two saves. Neither goalie gave up a goal against, and the period ended in a 0-0.
Spalding opened the scoring in the second half with a goal just over fifty minutes into the match.
The Tigers would have several opportunities to answer, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
As time was winding down, it looked like Iowa Wesleyan would drop their first game in SLIAC play.
The Tigers did not stop pressuring the Golden Eagle defense, and Juan Crespo was finally able to break through with the game tying goal just under eighty-eight minutes in.
Time would expire in regulation, and Iowa Wesleyan would play in their second straight overtime match.
In the first overtime period, Iowa Wesleyan controlled the possession.
The Tigers took four shots and held Spalding for getting a shot off. IW could not take advantage, however, as they failed to score and a second overtime was needed.
Spalding had a great opportunity in the second overtime to end the game, but the Golden Eagles sailed the shot over the net.
Iowa Wesleyan took advantage of the missed opportunity by Spalding. Blas Villaseca was able to get through several defenders and find the back of the net for the golden goal.
The Tigers outshot the Golden Eagles 25-17 in the match, and IW was led in shots by Tevin Yen, Juan Crespo, and Scott Travis. Trevor Haasis ended the match with seven saves for Iowa Wesleyan. They are now 5-4-2 on the season, and will return to action on Saturday, October 7th.
